The Charitable Trust Section functions for Michigan citizens as a repository of financial and other information about charities they may want to support. At any one time there are more than 8,000 charities registered with the Attorney General's Charitable Trust Section. Most charities soliciting contributions in Michigan are required to register with the Charitable Trust Section. One of the goals of the Attorney General is to help educate the public and to assist them in making wise choices about what charities to support.

The Open Meetings Act (OMA) took effect January 1, 1977. In enacting the OMA, the Legislature promoted a new era in governmental accountability and fostered openness in government to enhance responsible decision making.1 Nothing in the OMA prohibits a public body from adopting an ordinance, resolution, rule, or charter provision that requires a greater degree of openness relative to public body meetings than the standards provided for in the OMA. 2

Toys and games are tons of fun for kids and adults. Whether your kids are working on a puzzle, playing with building blocks or even inventing their own games, here are some toy safety tips to help them stay safe and have a blast.

Latex balloons are the main cause of toy-related choking fatalities in children.

Many small toys, remote controls, watches, key fobs, flameless candles, and musical greeting cards use button batteries. Button batteries can be very dangerous causing severe internal burns and even death if ingested.

Toys are recalled when they present a hazard for any reason, including choking, fire, burn, and laceration dangers.

Due to the extraordinary circumstances surrounding COVID-19, some of the remedies identified in recall announcements may not be available at this time. Please check with recalling firms for further details.

And please remember: CPSC and recalling firms urge consumers not to use recalled products.

You may be interested to know that many toys and items on the safety recall list can still be found at resale and consignment shops, and also at yard sales, flea markets or given away for a charity event. Consumers who frequent these shops need to be vigilant before purchasing a second-hand nursery product or toy second hand as some used products have caused injuries or even death.

Juvo Plus recalls Children’s Butterfly Net Sets due to violations of federal Phthalates and lead content bans. 

Components of the recalled butterfly net sets contain level of certain phthalates and lead that exceed the federal phthalate and lead content standards.  Phthalates and lead are toxic if ingested by young children and can cause adverse health issues.

North States Industries recalls Toddleroo Rotating Cabinet Latches due to a choking hazard.

The latching button can dislodge and detach from the cabinet latch, posing a choking hazard to young children. 

UPPAbaby recalls RIDGE jogging strollers due to fingertip amputation hazard.

The stroller’s rear disc brakes have openings that can cause amputation or laceration if a non-occupant child’s fingertip gets caught in the openings while the stroller is in use.

4Moms recalls MamaRoo and RockaRoo Infant Swings and Rockers due to entanglement and strangulation hazards.

When the swing or rocker is not in use, their restraint straps can dangle below the seat and non-occupant crawling infants can become entangled in the straps, posing a strangulation hazard.

Epoch Everlasting Play recalls Kidoozie Play Tents and Playhouses due to flammability risk and burn hazard.

The fabric playhouses and play tents fail to meet an industry flammability standard for these products, posing a risk of burn injuries to children.

This recall includes the following Kidoozie products: Ice Castle Tent, King Size Medieval Castle, My Clubhouse, Pirate Den Playhouse, Pop Up Theater Tent, Princess Hideaway Playhouse and Royal Castle Playhouse tents.

SAKAR International recalls Tony Hawk Silver Metallic Multi-Purpose helmet due to risk of head injury; sold exclusively at Walmart.

The recalled helmets do not comply with the positional stability and retention system required by US CPSC federal standard bicycle helmets.  The helmet can fail to protect in the event of a crash, posing a risk of head injury.

Scholastic recalls Shake Look Touch Books due to choking hazard.

The pom poms on the book can detach, posing a choking hazard to young children.

Target recalls children’s Cat & Jack Unicorn Cozy Pajama Sets due to burn hazard. 

The children’s pajama sets fail to meet the federal flammability standards for children’s sleepwear, posing a risk of burn injuries to children.

HD Premier recalls DigitDots Magnetic Balls due to ingestion hazard.

When two or more high-powered magnets are swallowed, the ingested magnets can attract to each other, or to another metal object, and become lodged in the digestive system. This can result in perforations, twisting and/or blockage of the intestines, infection, blood poisoning, and death. 

Mushie & Co recalls the FRIGG Silicone Pacifier due to choking hazard.

The base of the Classic Design has a fine slit that can cause the nipple to detach from the plastic shield, posing a choking hazard.
