Gyles Brandreth has defended Boris Johnson’s after the Prime Minister suggested families buy a new kettle to save them a whopping £10 on their energy bills.
The outgoing prime minister delivered his top tip during a speech in Suffolk yesterday, but it was quickly met by backlash across the nation.
Tory ministers have insisted ‘help is coming’ to ease spiralling energy bills and the cost-of-living crisis, but are waiting for a new leader to be elected next week.
In the meantime, Mr Johnson helpfully said: ‘If you have an old kettle that takes ages to boil, it may cost you £20 to replace it.
‘But if you get a new one, you’ll save £10 a year every year on your electricity bill.’
Despite the backlash slammed against the Prime Minister, Gogglebox star Gyles jumped in to defend him on This Morning.

Stand-in presenter Vernon Kay began by slamming Mr Johnson as ‘bumbling,’ saying: ‘What it is though is whenever he speaks it always looks like the first time he’s read his speech because he bumbles along a little bit and I get it, we all do it, but as the Prime Minister surely your delivery has to be authoritative,’ while Rochelle Humes added: ‘It should feel safe!’
However Gyles jumped in to defend: ‘That is his style,’ adding: ‘It brought him huge success’.
He continued: ‘What he was doing was, people are saying, how can you advocate spending all this money, and he’s saying, that’s long term thinking, and the analogy is: “Kettle, buy a new one and it will save you money in the long term.”‘
The combination of staggering energy costs and rampant inflation is creating the biggest squeeze in living standards for a century.
